The new free online course from the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) promises to help people better understand the technical basics of the Internet. It begins on March 1, lasts six weeks and targets everyone who uses the Network of Networks to watch videos, send emails, do banking or order goods and services every day. Interested parties can enroll in the current free course “The Internet: How the Internet Works (2023 Edition)” on the openHPI learning platform at: https://open.hpi.de/courses/internetworking2023. “The Internet now connects about five billion people all over the world. In Germany, about 94 percent of the population is connected to the Internet. So everyone should be well aware of how the Internet works, which has radically changed our lives and work over the past 54 years,” Says course leader Professor Christophe Menil. In the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), HPI scientist Meinel also wants to outline critical milestones in the development of the Internet to date, which developments have been successful or unsuccessful historically and what the potential development of the Internet is. the future.

According to the institute, participants should plan three to six hours per week for using instructional videos, self-tests, reading materials, handling assignments, graded exams, and discussions with other learners and teachers in the course forum. The course workload corresponds to three credit points from the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). All successful course participants will receive a qualifying text or certificate approximately one week after the end of the course.
