The Premier League will introduce semi-automatic offside from the 2024/25 season

The Premier League begins semi-automatic offside technology next season. As announced by the League, the shareholders' meeting unanimously agreed to start using the technology that has already been used in the 2022 World Cup. However, at the start of the 2024/25 season, everything is likely to remain the same; The semi-automatic offside technology will not be operational until after the international break in the autumn.

“This technology enables faster and more consistent virtual offside line placement based on player visual tracking and produces high-quality broadcast graphics to provide viewers with a better on-field and broadcast experience,” the Premier League said in its statement. Using artificial intelligence, the new technology sends an automatic offside warning to video referees.

The new technology uses twelve cameras installed under the roof of the stadium that capture the ball 50 times per second. To do this, 29 data points are recorded for each player to record their precise position on the field. In addition, the IMU sensor built into the ball is supposed to transmit ball data to the video control room 500 times per second to detect nearby offside situations. Video referees must then manually check the created offside line again, but the decision can still be predicted within seconds.
