AMD should suspend Radeon production of the RX 8000

With current RX-7000 graphics cards, AMD has a solid generation on offer, but it can only meet original expectations to a limited extent. So there is great hope for the upcoming RX-8000 graphics cards. However, it is claimed that this may create a conflict of interest. In addition to existing reports about high-end models that have been discontinued, as the Italian site claims Pieces and chipsGaming graphics cards should lose priority to AMD.

Accordingly, AMD will order fewer RX-8000 graphics cards from TSMC and will instead focus more on FPGA and GPGPU chips. The latter in particular is likely to be in the company’s financial interest in order to capitalize on the AI ​​boom and the resulting demand for powerful computing hardware. In line with this, AMD has been working on suitable software solutions for some time to cannibalize Nvidia’s profitable advantage.

If the production of upcoming computing accelerators (AI) and FPGAs actually falls at the expense of Radeon graphics cards, many gamers will likely have memories of the mining hype – when affordable graphics cards were rare. However, it is by no means certain that this is actually happening with Radeon RX 8000 graphics cards. Even if Bits and Chips is right about it leaking from an unknown source, there are still some questions. For example, Nvidia doesn’t manufacture its current flagship, the H100, in the same process as Geforce graphics cards – and this may also be the case with future AMD accelerators.

Additionally, there is still room for improvement even in the current 5nm process. For example, Nvidia’s AD102 GPU currently has a GCD of 609 mm², while the GCD of AMD’s Navi 31 GPU is just 300 mm². Even without new production and thus a conflict of interest with the AI/FPGA sector, it would be possible to use much larger chips, which, combined with improved architecture, could lead to more computing power and increased efficiency. So you probably shouldn’t worry too much about the “missing” Radeon generation, even if AMD’s focus changes.
