What is 5G? Simply explain the technology

5G is the evolution of 4G. It is the latest mobile communication standard that is fundamentally driving digitization.

What is 5G? The latest generation of mobile communications – and much more

5G stands for the fifth generation of mobile communications. Their predecessors are perhaps more familiar to some: LTE is the fourth generation (4G) standard and UMTS is a well-known 3G standard.

  • 5G is a standard that enables data transfer rates up to 10 times faster than LTE. This enables, among other things, real-time communication. In addition, the new mobile communication standard leads to digitization in various areas of life – at home and in the workplace.
  • 5G is not only faster than 4G, but also has a lower grace period (latency). This allows live TV programs to be broadcast without delay. In addition, 5G results in less power consumption during data transmission. Network overload is not feared by having too many participants in a radio cell with 5G, as is often the case with 3G or 4G.
  • The big advantage of 5G is the wide range of applications. In addition to stable and fast mobile Internet and associated downloading of large amounts of data without long waiting times, smart cars can communicate with each other using 5G thanks to their telemetry data. This prevents accidents.
  • Meter readings can be read automatically with 5G and displayed in real time on the dashboard. Real-time remote control of smart home devices is also possible. For example, you can turn on the heating in the house or close the curtains in the office just before leaving work.
  • Smart cities also benefit from the new mobile communications standard. Networked systems can be used both on and off rush hour to improve traffic.

5G: No fear of exposure to high radiation

5G has been available in the first cities since 2019. Since then, the 5G network has been continuously expanded and is now available from at least one provider in most cities.

  • In order to be able to use 5G, you need a suitable device. Smartphones, tablets and the like must support the new mobile communications standard. In addition, you need a tariff from a mobile operator such as Telekom or Vodafone that supports 5G.
  • The myth that 5G will be more harmful to health cannot be confirmed. The new mobile communications standard emits no more radiation than its predecessors. For the most part, the same mobile radio frequencies are used for 5G as for 4G.
  • In any case, a significant part of the radiation comes from the smartphone. Therefore it is advisable to keep the device in the vicinity as little as possible. Especially at night, there is no place for a smartphone in the bedroom. Also, instead of carrying the device in your pocket, consider carrying it in a bag. This is not quite close to the body. This greatly reduces radiation exposure.
