The Lay D Denton mod is a massive project that takes the original Deus Ex and lets you play through everything not like a rude cyberpunk man, but a cruel cyberpunk woman.
If you thought this meant just a quick switch of character model, you couldn’t be further from the truth. This is extensive and has led to changes throughout the game:
Lay D Denton’s project began to perform a major function cut from the original game; The ability to choose the gender of the hero. While the template swap and audio plugin can create a cheap fax copy, we felt that would be woefully inadequate. Immersion is a key feature of the Deus Ex experience, and the half-executed JC Denton woman will sabotage that. Either we’re doing it right or we shouldn’t care.
This is our attempt to get it right.
The DoD team designed the project around four main principles. These are voiceovers (each of Denton’s 1,700 lines of dialogue was redesigned by a new voice actor), NPCs redesigned (to better reflect their potential relationships with the protagonist), and a new player model (which had its own sound effects). – registered, which is half a head shorter than the original) and perhaps most impressively, a commitment to get back in the game and change pronouns all the time, changing every “he” to “she”, and every “man” to a “girl”.
It’s just a massive amount of work that mods have to do, but as they said, there’s no point in doing it unless it’s done right, and they definitely did it here.
Here is an example of acting and rewriting while working with a trailer:
While fans are wondering about some of the original and memorable lines of dialogue, here’s what:
