It was 2019 and it seemed like the return of the Prodigal Son – in this case, the Prodigal Father. After a season at Paris Saint-Germain, Gianluigi Buffon returned to Juventus, where he was one of the great figures between 2001 and 2018, with the main goal of achieving the only title he missed: the UEFA Champions League.
Two years later, Buffon left Juventus at the end of the most disappointing season of the decade for Torino, in which they failed to win the December championship and fell in the Champions League in the round of 16 against Porto. A year ago, despite the domestic title, Juventus also fell in the Champions League in the Round of 16, this time with Lyon.
Thus, at the age of 43, it appears Buffon’s last farewell to Juventus is coming.
My future is clear and defined. The goalkeeper said in an interview with beIN Sports that this beautiful and long experience with Juventus will definitively end at the end of this season.
In this second period with Juventus, Gianluigi Buffon was always the second choice and substitute for Poland’s Wojciech Szczesny, and in 2020/21 he played a total of only 12 matches. But despite his age, Gianluigi Buffon does not rule out continuing his career if a motivational proposal appears.
“Either I stop or find a situation that motivates me and gives me a new life experience. I will take all this into account,” the goalkeeper stressed.
Buffon leaves Juventus with 10 championships and four Italian Cups with a Turin shirt. He was also a runner-up of the Champions League on three occasions, and is the greatest man in the career of the legendary guardian.
