Stellantis wants to use Ample’s battery swapping technology

Automotive company Stellantis and American technology company Ample have signed an agreement to establish a technology partnership. This technology should allow a fully charged electric vehicle battery to be installed in the vehicle in a short time.

According to the statement, the partners want to work on integrating Ample’s modular battery replacement solution into Stellantis electric vehicles. “This technology enables customers who own electric vehicles to replace their dead battery with a fully charged battery at a battery changing station within a few minutes,” she says.

The two companies are also in discussions to expand the application of Ample’s modular battery swapping technology to meet Stellantis fleet and residential customer demand on other Stellantis platforms and in other regions. The first program is scheduled to begin in Madrid, Spain, in 2024 with a fleet of 100 Fiat 500 Electrics as part of Stellantis’ Free2move car-sharing offering.

“The partnership with Ample is another example of how Stellantis is exploring all the possibilities that enable freedom of mobility for our electric vehicle customers,” said Riccardo Stamatti, Senior Vice President of Stellantis’ Charging and Power Business Unit. “Among other projects we are focused on, Ample’s modular battery swap solution provides the opportunity to provide our customers with greater energy efficiency and outstanding performance while alleviating range anxiety. We look forward to running the first program with our premium Fiat 500 Electric vehicle.”

Large batteries are designed to replace the original battery of an electric car. “This is made possible by Ample’s modular batteries that fit into any electric vehicle. This allows Stellantis to integrate Ample’s technology without redesigning its vehicle platforms.

He continued: “In addition, Ample’s lightweight battery changing stations can be set up in public areas in just three days. This allows for a rapidly scalable infrastructure that can meet driver demand. When an electric car equipped with Ample technology approaches an Ample station, the station immediately recognizes the car. After parking the car, the driver begins changing the battery via the mobile phone application, so that the fully charged battery is installed in less than five minutes.
