It’s been three years since the Modern Mobility Research Center opened on the Platling Technology Campus – three years in which a lot has happened. Visitors will learn about the successes achieved, what the professors actually look at in the laboratory hall and how the brick building built by the railway is used today at the open day on Saturday 28 October, from 11am to 4pm. 17.

The show is intended for children and adults

“People keep coming in the door and asking if they can take a look at the renovated building,” says Maria Nagy, director of operations for TC Plattling. Interest is high. Mayor Hans Schmalhofer nods, saying the two brick buildings are part of Plattling’s DNA. Many grandfathers and proud railroad workers have worked here. As we know, those days are over, the brick buildings were renovated, and a laboratory hall was built, funded by the city of Platling. The majority of the city council voted in favor of the project, and the Social Democrats were always critical of the funding model, seeing the Free State as having a duty, not the municipality – and citizens also wondered what a technology campus like this would do for them.

“Practical research”

They should receive the answers at the open day. “We want to make it a family festival for everyone in Platling and people from the surrounding communities and cities,” Nagy emphasized in a press conference on Thursday morning. TH Deggendorf wants to provide insights not through scientific lectures, but through “practical research.”

For example, the team working on autonomous driving provides a driving simulator. Visitors marvel at the experiments taking place in chemistry laboratories. The Technical University also offers a hydrogen bike and an electric bobby car. These forms of modern mobility must be brought as close to people as concretely as possible. Naturally, guided tours of the hall and administration building are also available.

Mayor Schmalhofer is pleased that the Platling Volunteer Fire Department is participating in the open house with a barbecue stand: “There is a special connection here.” Where the laboratory hall stands today, the locomotive shed burned down in 2008, an inferno that spread to the collective Plattlinger etched in memory. Staff provide coffee and cake, with proceeds going to the Plattlingen organization.

The entire team – 32 employees, including six professors, and about 15 students – will be available to visitors at the open day and will explain the fields of energy storage systems, power electronics, autonomous driving, and robo-CT.

More orders, more projects, more employees

By the way, this team has grown a lot since its opening. Naji explains that there are now six professors, and the number of student assistants is constantly increasing due to constantly receiving applications and research projects. This is also an aspect: DIT also acts as an employer at Plattling Technology Campus and advertises to interested parties. Naji says there are already a lot of advertisements in schools.

“Research kindergartens” are also in the program. With the MINT (Mathematics, Computer Science, Natural Sciences and Technology) team from Deggendorf, children and young people can work with robots, for example. The goal is to arouse young people’s interest in research.
