Houston. NASA is dressing its astronauts in new outfits for future moon landings. NASA presented a prototype of the new spacesuit with US company Axiom Space on Wednesday at an event in Houston, Texas. In late summer, Axiom Space will supply NASA with the first set of suits for training purposes.

She added that the new suits, which took about ten years to develop – including a helmet, mask, long boots, and a kind of backpack – provide better protection against harsh conditions in space and better flexibility for astronauts than previous suits. Astronauts will be able to crouch or crouch better, for example, in order to pick up rocks from the lunar surface. Chief Engineer Jim Stein even demonstrated lunges and squats in the suit at the event.

The final spacesuits are supposed to be white
Cameras and lights are attached to the helmet, and the so-called backpack houses a life support system that’s been described as a kind of “combination of a very nifty snorkel bottle and air conditioner.” The spacesuit prototype is black, with orange, blue, and white trim. However, to protect the astronauts from the extreme temperatures on the Moon, the final spacesuits will be white.

“Building on NASA’s years of research and experience, the next generation of Axiom spacesuits will not only enable the first woman to walk on the Moon, but also open up the opportunity for more people than ever before to explore the Moon and do science,” NASA said. Administrator Bill Nelson. On Twitter, it was said that spacesuits should provide lunar explorers with “extra mobility, protection, and the latest technology.”
Beware of water in the helmet
The spacesuits that NASA astronauts currently wear when outside the International Space Station were introduced about 40 years ago, at the time of the space shuttles. Incidents of water buildup in helmets during field operations were a constant concern. Among others, the German astronaut Matthias Maurer was influenced. The development of new spacesuits has been planned for a long time, but has been delayed by various problems. NASA has commissioned American company Collins Aerospace to develop new spacesuits for the International Space Station.

The new suits from Axiom Space will be used primarily for the Artemis mission. The program, named after the Greek goddess of the moon, aims to land a woman and a non-white person on the moon for the first time, and trips to Mars are also planned for the distant future. Landing on the moon is planned for 2025.
