Today, the Misfits Gaming Group (MGG) announced that Team Heretics has purchased the Misfits Gaming LEC slot. The deal will be in effect for the 2023 season, with MGG remaining a minority partner of the team in the future. The move also means that MGG will withdraw from the LFL at the end of the 2022 season, according to the MGG press release.

For MGG, the move is another step in a larger strategy to increase its focus on nurturing creative talent as well as building competitive teams. MGG is increasingly collaborating with top creators from the gaming and streaming communities, collaborating with them to create projects they care about.

The most recent example of this is the upcoming launch (in August 2022) of TubNet, a new cross-platform Minecraft server to be launched by MGG and popular Minecraft creator and creator “Tubbo”. Check out the trailer just released at TwitchCon here:

MGG will appear in both Activision-Blizzard’s Overwatch League (Florida Mayhem) and Activision-Blizzard’s Call of Duty League (Florida Mutineers), while maintaining a presence in Riot Games’ VALORANT.

Ben Spoon, co-founder and CEO of Misfits Gaming Group says:

Misfits’ mission has always been to create distinctive, inclusive brands that empower our community to benefit from what makes them unique. We’ve partnered with a diverse group of innovative creators with a vision to do more than just broadcast and compete. Our mission as Misfits Gaming Group is to use our creative, strategic and financial resources to help our talent realize their ideas and dreams. TubNet is the first in a series of programs and companies that will operate under the Misfits umbrella run by the creators over the coming years. It’s bittersweet to know that our mission to diversify means we can’t be in all places at once, and we’re sad to say goodbye to the camaraderie and competition at LEC, but we didn’t take that decision lightly and went through a comprehensive process that we reviewed Many vendors were interested and we came to the conclusion that Team Heretics was the right choice to continue as responsible managers in the league.”

The heretics team issues a video statement

Team Heretics from Spain, who will be new to the LEC from 2023, have already posted a video, including an atmospheric trailer, about their promotion to the top division of European League of Legends. Unfortunately, the following conversation is only available in Spanish so far.

LEC welcomes the newcomer

Not only many active LEC teams, but also the LoL Esports crew welcome Heretics into the ranks of the top European teams in League of Legends. A statement from Riot Games said:

“We are excited to welcome our newest member of the European League of Legends, Team Heretics, who will be competing in the 2023 season! The Spanish organization will replace Misfits Gaming after securing a place in the league.

As one of the most popular esports organizations in Spain with many talented teams across different leagues, Team Heretics aims to push further boundaries to become a strong center in the LEC. As winners of one of Spain’s biggest esports competitions, LVP SuperLiga, we’re excited to see what the future holds for them.

As excited as we are to welcome Team Misfits to the LEC, we are saddened to see Team Misfits leave. They have been an integral part of the European League of Legends scene since their inception in 2016 and have given us more unforgettable surprises than any other team in the league. […]”
