This is what it’s about: The focus of “How to Say Goodbye” is a recent deceased who finds himself in a strange medium world. There he meets other spirits who are either trying to find a way to the afterlife as he does, or who like it well in this strange place. It is now up to the player to help the souls that want it on their way.
The special thing: In “How to Say Goodbye”, the player does not control individual characters, but rather the environment. By moving the squares on which the characters stand, he solves various puzzles. Of course, this mechanic also fits well with the game’s theme, which is about helping each other.
conclusion: Sad, beautiful and always funny: “How to Say Goodbye” packs serious theme into an inventive little game. The puzzles are challenging but not too challenging, and the story of farewells and grief fit beautifully into the game. There are only a few places where you struggle a bit with the controls. Additionally, “How to Say Goodbye” is almost a bit short with three to four hours of playtime. With a beautiful story, graphics inspired by children’s book masters like Tomi Ungerer, Tove Jansson, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and Maurice Sendak, and great puzzles, this isn’t a problem.
