For esports leaders at New Tech High School, gaming is a lifelong passion

gAming has been a part of Antonio B’s life since he and his brothers played “Just Dance” when they were kids. Today, he is the captain of BF Darell’s New Tech High School esports team. After three years of being a member of the club, Antonio has managed to make many friends and get out of his comfort zone.

“At first I was very calm. I found a senior who helped me be more open. Then, last year, I became team captain. It helped me learn how to lead a team, and eventually I was able to make friends at other schools. It’s comforting to know that someone else has something in common with you, “Now I’m more confident in meeting other people,” he said.

Antonio’s leads, Garvonte G. and Andrew B., also feel a sense of nostalgia and togetherness when it comes to video games.

“I became interested in games when I was four or five years old. I got a Wii for Christmas one year and my dad had a PlayStation 2. He played it a lot, “So we started playing some old games together which allowed me to connect with him, but also got me into Nintendo,” Andrew said.

For kids like Antonio, Andrew and Garvonte, seeing the Dallas ISD eSports clubs grow and develop has been the most amazing part of becoming a member. “You don’t really expect other people to love the game as much as you do,” Andrew said. I was really surprised to see how many other schools were doing the same thing as us.
