Vienna (A) Coveris, a leading packaging manufacturer based in Vienna, is setting new standards in printed polyethylene film recycling with its new ReCover recycling plant in Louth, UK. ReCover is a recently created division of Coveris, which uses a pioneering process to produce the highest quality recycling materials from plastic waste. The new facility in Louth is the second in the packaging company’s portfolio, but the first to use the inking process.

“When we started planning ReCover, our goal from the outset was to offer a new business model that would close the plastic loop. With ReCover, we position ourselves as a recycler with a clear technological advantage. With ReCover Louth, we not only opened our second location, but also ushered in the important step Next is on our way to a more sustainable future,” said Kristian Kolarik, CEO of Coveris.

High quality packaging materials instead of construction films
ReCover Louth is creating a new life cycle for PE packaging films printed from post-industrial waste for the UK and EU markets and, like the first ReCover plant in Blaenavon, plays a key role in furthering Coveris’ ‘No Waste’ sustainability vision.

The Coveris factory in Louth has a long tradition of reprocessing waste printed film that was previously recycled into construction film. With the ReCover factory, which has now opened after a two-year construction period, high-quality recycling products can also be produced for the first time. In an innovative process, called de-inking, printing ink is removed from printed film packaging waste and then processed into high quality recycled PE pellets. This so-called ReGen forms the basis for high-quality packaging in the non-food sector, such as shrink film or sanitary paper packaging.

Large capacity and private laboratory
ReCover Louth will be able to produce 5,000 tons of ReGen pellets per year using only printed waste from the various Coveris Group sites in Austria and Europe and suitable production waste from various customers and partners.

This not only reduces dependence on and consumption of new raw materials, but also contributes greatly to climate protection. Because with our pioneering process, plastic packaging remains part of the cycle,” says Kolarik. “The Louth facility also includes a fully-equipped ReCover lab to support the innovation process, manage quality and control ReGen and its use in extruding Coveris films with recycled content. “
