Cleantech: Decarbonizing Bamboo | Clean thinking

Carbonauten uses fast-growing grasses for biocarbon production and CO2 research2– negative material.

China depends on Carbon removal from bamboo On cleantechs from Germany: Cleantech startup Carbonauten from Baden-Württemberg, whose solution is described in detail here, has been awarded a $15m contract from Xianning in southeast China to link carbon dioxide to biocarbon. Specifically, the clean-tech startup is using a pyrolysis carbonization process to convert fast-growing bamboo grasses into bio-carbon. In 2024, 24,000 tons of biocarbon will begin to be produced.

To date, Carbonauten has operated a technology facility in eastern Germany. Wood scraps are mainly used there. Xianning In China, an administrative region with abundant bamboo fields. Bamboo grows up to 80 cm per day and is several meters high. It binds a lot of carbon dioxide: one hectare of bamboo absorbs 17 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

China’s carbon pioneers are taking advantage of this massive storage capacity – and playing an important role in decarbonizing with bamboo. Through future pyrolysis carbonation in the company’s plants, the carbon dioxide will be permanently bound as a solid. The so-called bio-technical carbon is produced.

In Germany, the South German company is working to incorporate bio-carbon into products — such as garden tools from Gardena. A project that takes place in China after decarbonization using bamboo, carbon monoxide2– Researching, manufacturing and selling negatives in China. These are also referred to as negative emission technology – that is, bio-based NET materials.

20 Bamboo Carbon Remover Units

The investment costs of €15 million will be used to install 20 Carbonauten carbon units. Means: Annual production of 32,000 tons of biocarbon to permanently avoid 105,600 tons of carbon dioxide. Particularly important for municipal heat supply: 160 GWh of thermal energy is produced as a by-product in the process.

Due to its strategic location in southern Hubei, on the Yangtze River, Jianning is particularly suitable as a major bamboo decarbonization project. Xianning municipal government plans to develop the city into a green city.
