A former Google software developer reportedly stole AI technology
The former Google employee faces up to 10 years in prison. According to the US Department of Justice, he stole confidential data on artificial intelligence and shared it with Chinese companies.
A former Google software engineer is accused of stealing artificial intelligence technology from Google while secretly working for two China-based companies, the US Department of Justice said.

A former Google software developer reportedly stole confidential data from the internet giant's artificial intelligence projects and secretly worked with companies based in China. This was announced by the US Department of Justice on Wednesday. The suspect was arrested in Newark, California. He is charged with four counts of theft of trade secrets at the federal level, and faces up to ten years in prison for each individual count.
The Northern Judicial District of California has now opened criminal proceedings against the man. According to the indictment, Google hired him in 2019. He had access to confidential information about the company's high-performance data centers. Two years ago, he reportedly began uploading hundreds of files to a private Google Cloud account.
A few weeks after the alleged theft began, the software developer was offered a CTO position at a technology company still under construction in his native China. This company announced its use of artificial intelligence technology. According to the indictment, the suspect traveled to China, attended investor meetings and attempted to raise capital for the company.
At the same time, he founded a startup company based in China and served as its managing director. The company sought to build “large-scale AI models” “powered by high-performance chips,” the indictment said. He did not disclose his side activities to Google. At the end of December, he resigned from the Internet giant. Days later, Google executives reportedly discovered him.
