As part of Sony’s latest episode of State of Play, which aired late Wednesday night, Square Enix revealed a new gameplay trailer for the upcoming RPG Forspoken. The new trailer is called “Worlds Collide” and in just under two minutes it shows us many impressions of the game world and of the battles that the protagonist Frey will experience with players as part of her adventure.

It becomes clear that Frye is being pushed to her limits in the strange and cruel land of Athena at the same time. Their magical talent alone is not enough to assert themselves against a variety of threats. Instead, you also rely on different mobility and parkour skills to avoid devastating attacks.

The scenes that have just been presented and premiered look very impressive and promising at first glance, but at the same time they also give us an idea of why developer Luminous Productions only recently reported the postponement of the action role. -Play a game. Originally, Forspoken was supposed to be released on May 24 for both PlayStation 5 and PC. Now those responsible for this are taking more time and declaring October 11, 2022 as the new date for publication.

The accompanying statement stated:

We have decided to postpone the Forspoken release date to October 11, 2022. Our vision for this exciting new IP is to create a game world and a hero that players around the world will want to experience for years to come, so getting it right is very important to us. For this reason, we will be fully focused on improving the game over the next few months, and we can’t wait to experience Fry’s Journey this fall.”

More polishing, great potential

In short, this means that they want to invest more time in polishing in order to offer the best possible gaming experience from the start. In principle, this is welcome as long as this is still the only tangible transformation and the product can actually improve the quality significantly due to the additional time. Forspoken definitely has the potential for the next big RPG.

If we take a closer look at the scenarios shown in the trailer, this becomes more than obvious. The world of Athia’s games is being destroyed by The Breach, a creepy corruption that turns everything he touches into a deformed, bloodthirsty version. This is how the developers explain it. Many of Frey’s opponents also grew out of this corruption. The creatures of the world through corruption became frightening dangers.

Tortured creatures
Enemies in Forspoken are creatures affected by corruption.

In the photo we see, for example, a sample of the so-called “gigas”, which can cause the entire Earth to shake. These creatures also fit in well with the Elden Ring … but after that, a number of similarly dangerous creatures will inhabit the corrupt world of Athena. The black dragon that we saw in the game videos is not a coincidence.

Of course we’re not defenseless as Frye. The new trailer also explicitly shows that, in addition to a number of magical abilities, we can also use acrobatics to avoid enemy attacks and gain the upper hand in battle. How far everything is going in the direction of “Souls like” cannot be judged conclusively yet.

So far, we think it’s especially cool for Fry to use the elements in her environment to surf the water, for example, as shown below.

bottled water
Fry can use elements in her environment for herself.

Until everything in the game works as promised in the previous trailers, we’re happy to wait a few months longer for Forspoken. If expectations were finally met, it was definitely worth it.
