What has changed in the ROG Ally X gaming laptop? I touched the actual device and checked it.

As previously reported, on June 2, 2024, ASUSTeK Computer (hereinafter referred to as ASUS) announced the new model of its gaming laptop “ROG Ally”.ROG Ally X“Announced. I had the opportunity to actually try this product at the ASUS event held in conjunction with “COMPUTEX 2024”, so I would like to present it along with the comparison with the current model ROG Ally.

ROG Ally X

ROG Ally The 7-inch display and “Ryzen Z1 Extreme” use of the installed SoC (System-on-a-Chip) remain the same, but the main memory, onboard storage, onboard battery and interface are still there. It has been reinforced.

ROG ALLY Large-scale gaming often requires both main memory and graphics memory capacity, so increased memory capacity is welcome. The memory clock has also been increased from the previous 6400MHz to 7500MHz.

Equipped with 24GB LPDDR5 memory. The picture shows 4 chips, but it's actually 12GB x 2.

The built-in battery has been increased from the ROG Ally's 512GB to 1TB. In addition, another feature is that the size of the installed SSD has been changed from the small M.2 Type 2230 to the general M.2 Type 2280. Although the product warranty has expired, I also appreciate that it is now easier to replace it when more storage capacity is needed.

The built-in storage has been changed to an M.2 Type 2280 SSD.

The remaining battery capacity has doubled from 40Wh to 80Wh. ASUS explains that the ROG Ally's nominal battery life is “up to 2 hours for heavy gaming and up to 6.8 hours for relatively casual gaming.” However, when actually playing games, there were a few instances where the battery lasted too long, and the battery often ran out after about an hour and a half. If the ROG Ally X's built-in battery capacity is doubled, you should be able to keep gaming a little longer.

As for the interface, the connector for connecting to the “XG Mobile” external GPU box for laptops has been removed, and USB4 has been newly added. This increases the number of USB ports to two, making it easier to connect peripherals such as wireless earphone receivers while charging the ROG Ally

There are two USB Type-C ports on the top side. In the image, the port on the left is USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C, and the port on the right is USB 4. The current ROG Ally Big.

On the other hand, the size and weight of ROG Ally
Weight increased from 608 grams to 678 grams. However, when I held the actual device, I didn't notice much of a difference and simply accepted it as a trade-off for improved ease of use.

The other point that I felt changed was the gamepad part. In particular, the shape of the D-Pad's buttons has changed[A/B/X/Y]. Pressing the D-Pad felt smooth, and the buttons felt smooth[A/B/X/Y]It seems to have a stronger bounce when pressed.

Another point is that the expansion buttons[Macro 1/Macro 2]The one at the back is smaller. Depending on how I press it, when playing games with crowded controls, I sometimes found myself touching the button[ماكرو 1/ماكرو 2]Unintentionally, so this change also leaves a good impression.
