The Biden administration is preparing a list of advanced Chinese chip factories that will be blocked from obtaining key tools, three people familiar with the matter said, to make it easier for companies to stop the flow of technology to China.
The list may be released in the next few months, one of the people said.
The Commerce Department in 2022 banned US companies from supplying equipment to Chinese factories that make advanced chips, as the US seeks to severely restrict Beijing's technological progress on national security grounds.
But the companies say it is difficult to identify factories in China that make advanced chips, and have long called on the Commerce Department to release a list.
These efforts show that the United States is moving to tighten existing restrictions on chips in China by making it easier for American companies to comply with the restrictions.
The Ministry of Commerce declined to comment, and the Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Officials addressed the companies' request at the annual export control conference in Washington, D.C., this week.
“People say: Please tell us which of these are progressives [Fabriken] “You really care,” said an official who spoke on one committee and confirmed the work on the list.
The official continued: “The list probably will not be comprehensive if we are able to do this. But whenever we can help identify the facilities that we are concerned about, we hope that will help us.”
