The cooperation aims to get articulated trucks “on track”.

Transporting many goods with an articulated truck will still be on the road, even over long distances. To be able to transport many of these trailers by rail, it is necessary to make the loading of the trailers as easy and fast as possible, the Port of Vienna is convinced.

This is precisely the goal of the collaboration with the trailer innovator Helrom GmbH. On December 27, 2022, City Councilor for Economic Affairs Peter Haneke, Managing Director of Wien Holding Kurt Gollowitzer, Managing Director of WienCont Monika Gindl-Muzik, and Bruno Weissmann of Helrom GmbH are convinced of the loading technology.

To date, more than 90 percent of trailers in Europe cannot be moved from road to rails due to technical barriers. Using the Helrom system, non-movable containers can be loaded into Vienna.

“The Port of Vienna is an important economic center and, with the new on-site loading system for trailers, is also based on innovative technology. This means that more freight traffic can be diverted from road to rail, which in turn contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gases.” The Port of Vienna is considered again Pioneering when it comes to sustainability and helping achieve Vienna’s climate goal”, says Peter Hanke, City Councilor for Finance, Economics, Labor and International Affairs and Wiener Stadtwerk.

“International Trade Routes Interface”

“At the interface of international trade routes, the Port of Vienna plays an important role in the Austrian transport system and is therefore a role model for the entire sector – also in terms of climate protection. One of the most important goals for the coming years is to transport more goods on the road to rail and water. This is Exactly where the innovative loading technology comes in,” says Kurt Gollwitzer, managing director of Wien Holding.

“As a remote station, WienCont is a major interface between rail and road modes of transport. More than 700 trucks / day bring loads to the train. In the port of Freudenau, we do our best to support the transfer of transport to rails as environmentally friendly as possible,” she says. Monica Gendel Muzik, Managing Director, WienCont.
