Technology – QR Codes: Bridges Between Real and Virtual World – News

There are inventions that are thought to be only a few years old – but they are ancient when measured against the rapid pace of technical development. The QR code is such an invention. Born in 1994. But he has really made it into everyday life just now.

QR code generated: We pay the geometric pattern at the farm shop, when parking and when shopping online, or we register at the restaurant. The reason for its popularity lies in the fact that it can do two things at the same time.

On the other hand, it shows the user that there is data at the point where the QR code is attached. So it works as a marker. On the other hand, it acts as a data bus when the user scans the code. It can provide much more than just a link to a website. For example, the full program code fits the popular classic Nokia.a snakeThe link opens in a new window»In the QR code.

Perfect for augmented reality

Unlike a barcode on products, a QR code is two-dimensional, i.e. it has a length and width. This makes it very attractive for augmented reality applications, for example with a smartphone: if the device measures pattern distortion, it can be used to calculate the spatial location of the mobile phone in the room.

“The shape of the QR code gives us an understanding of the environment and the location of the cell phone,” explains Patrick Goss, who created the 3D modeling at Eastern Applied Science University and works on AR / VR projects. The QR code enables, for example, to show a 3D object on the mobile screen and to adapt it to the position of the viewer.

Great potential in augmented reality glasses

This also works with augmented reality glasses like Hololins.

Their development is still in its infancy, but it has a lot of potential. Daniel Anderson is convinced that the QR code is more than just a temporary solution; He will be with us for a long time to come. The expert works as the general manager of 3DQR, which programs augmented reality applications, for example for maintenance work.

Patrick Joos has another example of how a QR code still has its big days ahead of it: For about a year now, it’s been appearing more and more often on Swiss pay slips. More prizes are not possible!
