After RocketWerkz and lead developer Dean Hall have offered pre-orders a biweekly test weekend of ICARUS for the past few months, the new survival title is now in line with the wildlife hype about “7 vs. Wild” on Steam for €24,99 (until December 7th). 2021 for €22.49) available. Late in the evening, the alien planet, which gave the game its name, opens its gates and invites you to adventures in stormy forests, frigid icy deserts and many other biomes.
Icarus tells the story of mankind who has pushed the Earth into the abyss, and thus is desperately searching for a replacement. This variant is supposed to be the planet Icarus. In addition to the almost perfect forests and animals of Earth, Icarus offers one thing above all: a mysterious alien substance that the greedy are trying to obtain in order to earn a golden nose by selling it.
In that attempt, the volunteers, motivated by said greed for wealth, defied all dangers. The said role of volunteers, called prospectors in the game, is played by the players. You can find more information about ICARUS and the principle of the game here.
Twitch and Steam indicate successful release
A few hours after the release, tens of thousands of players were simultaneously playing ICARUS via Steam, which eventually also caused excitement in Dean Hall. What started with 25,000 simultaneously active players grew overnight to more than 40,000 players and over 76,000 viewers on Twitch.
These are definitely not bad numbers for the first 24 hours and they raise anticipation for what’s to come. ICARUS currently has more viewers than big titles like Forza Horizon 5, Rainbow Six Siege, Destiny 2, Rocket League, Battlefield 2042, Call of Duty: Vanguard, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl and sometimes like Halo Infinite.
But not only on Twitch, but also on Steam, some of the big titles are currently lagging when it comes to simultaneously active players. We’ve already read some of them under titles that have fewer viewers than ICARUS on Twitch today, December 4, 2021. We mention here again Battlefield 2042, Rocket League, and Forza Horizon 5. However, it should be noted that ICARUS is only available on Steam, while The majority of Battlefield players via Origin and Rocket League players via the Epic Games Store and the Forza Horizon player can play via the Xbox app or the Microsoft Store thus leaving Steam numbers to an internal player. Of course, game ending across consoles was not included in this statistic.
However, we’re curious to see how successful Icarus will be in the future.
