Spider-Man 2 will be darker than Insomniac’s last two games

Marvel stated that Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 will give fans a “darker” sequel to the previous two sequels, comparing the game’s tone to The Empire Strikes Back.

On a recent episode of the podcast This week in MarvelMarvel Entertainment Creative Vice President Bill Rosman gave fans a quick summary of what they can expect from Spider-Man 2.

“If the first Spider-Man game was Star Wars, then Spider-Man 2 is kind of our empire,” Roseman said. It’s getting a little darker. Spidey’s debut Insomniac adventure has prepared well fans for the studio version of Peter Parker by exploring elements of the character’s secret identity and superhero relationships without delving too early into some of the more popular stories.

Similarly, the release of Spider-Man: Miles Morales gave fans the opportunity to experience the story of a teenage boy, Miles, who established himself and found his rhythm as a superhero, while Peter Parker was away due to an annual vacation.

That’s not to say that neither character experiences darker elements in their respective storylines, but there is certainly room to explore in more depth according to Insomniac now that the two characters have proven themselves. From the trailer Insomniac gave during Spider-Man 2’s show at this year’s PlayStation show, we know Peter and Miles will team up to take on Venom, the infamous symbiotic villain.

While Venom isn’t always portrayed as truly evil, as in recent cinematic adaptations of the character by Tom Hardy, the symbiote’s life form certainly has the potential to create a more sinister sequel.

Elsewhere in the interview, Rosman was relatively silent when discussing Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine game, which was also featured in a short clip at this year’s PlayStation show. “We’ll eventually reveal a release date for Wolverine,” Roseman said. “To find out more, go back and study these trailers – they’re full of details and Easter eggs.”
