Linus Roth and the Johann Sebastian Rieu Orchestra combine Bach’s major violin concerto with the evergreen samba and bossa nova.
“Sambach” – of course: Bach and Samba! But the title of the new album by Linus Roth and company is an understatement. There’s a lot on offer: Bach’s famous Violin Concerto in E major, music by Villa-Lobos, a Bach fan, and a wonderful cross-section of Brazilian folk music. With many famous tunes, such as Jobim’s bossa nova Evergreens or Benjor’s “Mas que nada”. Bach’s concerto fascinates with historical information, precise expressions and full of tension. Soloist Roth offers a rich palette of shapes, effects, colors and shades. The change between contrast and fusion in interaction with the group is wonderful. The multiple internal increases, intensification and narrowing are impressive. This also applies to Villa-Lobos’s pieces, which are filled with emotion and longing. The selected samba and bossa standards are in a class of their own – bouncy, raucous and sparkling. Danger of addiction!
