[PLUS] Nine monitors and 4K / UHD TVs for gamers in a comparison test

Graphics cards are still inhumanly expensive. If not, we would have long ago reached the era of 4K gaming. This claim is bold, but clear – one can question this in detail and speculate in another way. But perhaps you can read the despair between the lines when we reach such a condition in the introduction. The black graphic is happening (rightly) enough now, so the gaming monitors we’re talking about are a small ray of hope in this (slide) crisis. The bad news: there is still a shortage of panels. The good news: It’s not as bad as a lack of chips. In the spring of 2021, speculation looked similarly bleak, and while the dearth of chipsets proved correct, there are now models available in 4K/UHD and 144Hz that are reasonably priced as well.

A touch of sophistication can also be felt in monitors, while in LCD monitors it happens very slowly anyway. The 10-bit color depth is prevalent on most mid-range models, even if it’s “only” with 8-bit Frame Rate Control (FRC). This means that the panel displays 8 bits, i.e. 256 gradations originally, and the others display up to 1,024 gradations with a quick change of 2 gradations. The quotes for “only” are intended, because on the one hand, the difference from real and original 10 bits is hardly visible, and on the other hand almost everything happens in 8 bits practically. The practical advantage is therefore limited, as for the difference between 120 and 144 Hz we find “only” 120 with TVs, while 144 Hz is better marketed among gaming monitors.
