UN approves Olympic Truce for 2022 Beijing Winter Games

A resolution entitled “Building a better and more peaceful world through sport and the Olympic ideal” was voted on in favor of the commission’s session

The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday unanimously approved the Beijing 2022 Olympic Truce, which will go into effect from a week before and until one after the Winter Games, which will be held from February 4-20 in the Chinese capital.

“Building a better and more peaceful world through sport and the Olympic ideal” is the name of the resolution voted by the 173 member states present at the session held at the organization’s headquarters in New York.

The resolution “highlights the importance of cooperation between member states to collectively implement the Olympic Truce values ​​throughout the world,” and appreciates, in this task, the role of the International Olympic Committees and the Paralympics, as well as the United Nations (United Nations).

Likewise, this measure ends the “expectation” that these Winter Olympics present an “important opportunity” to harness the power of sport to “advance the world by promoting a climate of peace, development, resilience, tolerance and understanding.”

In this regard, states recognize that the Olympic Truce should constitute a tool “to promote peace, dialogue and reconciliation in conflict areas during and after the Olympic and Paralympic Games period.”

“The Olympic Truce is a great recognition of our ability to unite the best athletes in the world in a peaceful competition above any political dispute,” said IOC President Thomas Bach in a speech read by his representative. in the United Nations.

The official highlighted the fact that these major sporting events are an “anti-discrimination” tool, in a “peaceful and respectful” competition, which translates to a “human bond” that is increasingly important in a “polarized world like today”.

He added, “We will only be able to accomplish this task if the Olympic Games are held without political, cultural and other differences. This is only possible if the Olympic Games are politically neutral and do not become a tool for achieving political goals.”

With a history of 3000 years, the Olympic Truce was established at a time when wars were temporarily suspended so that athletes could travel to Olympia to participate in the ancient Olympic Games and then return safely to their cities.
