Heart failure, Alzheimer’s, hearing ability: through a technology platform created at the Göttingen Cluster of Excellence “MBExC”, therapeutic approaches can be developed against heart and brain diseases. The project is led by a researcher from the University Medical Center Göttingen.
Göttingen. Scientists from the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG) have created a new technology platform in the ‘MBExC’ cluster of excellence that enables the electrophysiological characterization of isolated cells. The goal is to gain a better understanding of the functional properties of heart muscle and neurons, according to the UMG Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology. Specifically, the goal is to develop therapeutic approaches to heart and brain diseases.
One of the most important similarities and basis for the function of both systems is electrical activity. The new platform aims to advance the investigation of the smallest electrically active units of the heart and brain by researchers from the Göttingen Cluster of Excellence “Multiscale Bioimaging: From Molecular Machines to Exciting Cell Networks (MBExC)”. Combined with developments in optogenetics, the platform is considered ‘unique’.
