New steering wheel technology for more safety

“Reality meets future,” says Mercedes of its iconic Vision One-Eleven concept car. A “meeting of reality with the past” might be more appropriate. After all, it was the vision of a futuristic sports car with an electric motor that was inspired by the legendary SL 300 and C 111.

Three things immediately catch the eye of the device: the height of the car is only 1.17 meters, the gull wing doors and the square steering wheel in the cockpit. It is called the control yoke and it is a rectangular control horn. This should make it easier for the driver to read the instruments above or behind the steering wheel.

New steering wheel for added safety

And there are experts who believe that this futuristic shape also improves road safety. In any case, steering with a hand placed casually on top of the round steering wheel is no longer possible in this way. Drivers are practically forced to hold the control yoke with their left and right hands at mid-rise in the optimal quarter to third position.

Steering wheels are mostly a well-rounded thing. Mercedes wants to change that and is reportedly planning an angle control yoke for the new S-Class.

According to media reports, Mercedes plans to introduce a steering control system along with a new steering-by-wire system for 2027. Then the EQS and S-Class series will be reunited and have a common successor. According to the current situation, this is likely to be the first fully electric S-class.

For this purpose, the new control system must be combined with new software as well, which must be able to variably adapt the steering behavior to the current driving conditions.

In the past, Tesla has wanted to head into the future with such a controlling yoke on its models. Meanwhile, Tesla has turned on reverse gear and once again installs classic steering wheels as standard. In the USA, coupling control is only available for an additional fee on the Model S and X.
