A new version of the system software for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles is being rolled out worldwide today and brings with it many innovations, Sony reports in a current press release.

It is now possible to create and join open and closed chat groups on both PS5 and PS4 consoles. The PS5 system software user interface has been improved in terms of game base and prize cards, and the PS5 gets accessibility options like mono audio for headphones. PS5 Control Center Pro Tips cards update console owners’ knowledge of useful features.

In the coming months, the PS5’s Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) will be rolling out. When using HDMI 2.1 compatible displays, VRR synchronizes the display refresh rate with the console’s graphic output. Previously released PS5 titles may be fully optimized for VRR with a game patch, and future games may already include VRR support upon release. Another option also allows VRR to be applied to unsupported games.

Commenting on the new Party feature, Hideaki Nishino, Senior Vice President, Platform Planning and Management said:

“Starting tomorrow, we will be gradually releasing the ability for PS app users to create or join open and closed parties from within the app as well. We’ve also updated the Game Base user interface in the PS app to make it easier to access Friends, Party, and Messaging features. This allows for a consistent gaming experience with PS5 Users of the PS Remote Play mobile app can enjoy the new “dark mode” depending on their smartphone settings and choose from the new screen reader languages for iOS and Android including Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Finnish, Swedish, Turkish, Greek and Thai Chinese (Traditional and Simplified) ).”
