New navigation device for spine surgery – SWR Aktuell

It is new and rare, but it is now being used in the SLK clinic in Plattenwald: a navigation device designed to make spinal operations safer.

The SLK clinic in Plattenwald in Bad Friedrichshahl (Heilbronn district) is one of five clinics nationwide now using a new navigation device for spine operations. This would make operations faster, safer and less radiation intensive.

Navi for self-driving cars

The camera technology was originally developed for self-driving car navigation and has recently been used in the operating room. And with success, according to the clinic in Bad Friedrichshahl.

Because the operations performed on the spine are complex and because 2D X-ray images are not always possible with 100% accuracy. It is said that using a navigation device “makes these problems a thing of the past.” Thus surgeons and patients benefit equally.

One of the first patients is Erich Heinzmann (right): He had surgeon Andreasziogner (left) explain the new technology to him. In the background: photos of Heinzmann’s spine.

Al-Jarrah: “The changes are profound”

For Andreasziogner, Head of the Department of Spine Surgery, the use of this technology is profoundly changing spinal operations: “We […] “Able to recognize skeletal structures much better and therefore act more accurately.”

This also reduces the reoperation rate.

In addition, X-rays are rarely needed during the procedure. This also reduces radiation exposure for patients as well as operating room staff, Zeugner says. CT images taken before the operation are said to be superimposed with the system’s live camera images during the operation. This creates a 3D image, making operations safer for patients.

He is 71 years old and one of the first patients

One of the first patients on whom the new technology was used also seems to be relieved: Erich Heinzmann comes from Obersulm (Heilbronn region) and is 71 years old. He talks about a “new quality of life.” According to his statements, he was no longer able to walk upright before the operation. Today he can ride his bike again without any problems.
