on YouTube video channels Project Air Maker James presents a demo of the Hyperloop train. Originally he wanted to test the limits of pneumatic engines. However, this has turned into a hyperloop-like system that transports model trains at lightning speed.
According to the video, James first discovered the vacuum technology from Flight Rail. When he returned to his workshop in the UK, he used this knowledge to build hyperloop models at a scale of 1:48. He used acrylic tubes as vacuum tubes, and the rods were made of aluminium.
3D printing has played an important role. Various components such as arches and wheel assemblies were additionally manufactured. This allowed James to run a rapid prototyping process with continuous improvements. However, exposure to sunlight caused the printed parts to warp, causing them to deviate from the track.
The video impressively shows how useful 3D printing in the concept stage can be to a technical system. But it also demonstrates the importance of materials and environment in 3D printing.
All in all, James’ experience shows that great results can be achieved with simple means and 3D printing.
