Thermal and electrical management are key strategic pillars of the globally active Mahle Group, headquartered in Stuttgart. The technical questions are complex, because what matters depends on the correct interaction of individual parts – such as battery life, EV range, motor behaviour, and fast-charging capability. At all times and under all weather conditions, every component of the drive system needs the right temperature. At the same time, thermal management ensures a comfortable climate inside the car – driver comfort is not only pleasant, but also a safety factor.
Great climate?
Naturally, indoor air conditioning should have as little impact on the range as possible. This results in high demand on the entire system; The complexity and value of details increases dramatically. The newly developed Mahle unit combines heat exchangers, cooling pumps, condensers, refrigeration units, sensors and valves into a single unit. This saves installation space, development effort and costs – while increasing efficiency: According to Maley, up to 20 percent greater range can be achieved using the unit in conjunction with a heat pump compared to a purely electric heater system. Furthermore, the electric fan is very quiet: an essential feature, not least in residential areas during charging operations, especially at night.
