Instead of “evolving”, we sought to “deepen”

――Fans have been waiting for a long time, and the full version of Persona 3 has finally been revealed. As a content creator, I think it was a long-awaited announcement.

WadaYes. “Persona 3” is a very important title, not only for the staff who have been involved in development since the original release like me, but also for Atlus. And above all, users love this action and characters so much…

In our “Atlus poll” every year, “Persona 3” has been at the top of the list for the past few years as a title we want to see again. This work has been achieved precisely thanks to everyone’s support.

――What is your stance on this new version?

WadaAs a major premise, we haven’t changed the scenario or the characters that form the basis of Persona 3. Moreover, the last numbering work in the series,”Personality 5“or”royalistI would like you to enjoy graphics and playability that are comparable to those of. We thought this was the way this remake should be, and we stuck to that stance from the very beginning of development.

“Wada-san, you are in the position of overseeing the entire development as general producer. Yamaguchi-san and Niitsuma-san, this is the first time that Famitsu has appeared as members of the character team, so please introduce yourself.

YamaguchiThis is Yamaguchi, the director. When the original “Persona 3” came out, I was only playing as a user. After joining Atlus,Personality 4]I was responsible for creating event scenes in which the 3D model characters reveal their talk skits.

I had no experience directing development in general, but I personally really liked “3,” so one day I learned Wada was crafting a remake of it, and I definitely wanted to get involved. I raised my hand.

WadaAnd I was chosen as the director (laughs). He also had an extraordinary love for “3”, so I expected that. Niitsuma was given the role of supporting Yamaguchi as producer and creating an environment for smooth development.

new wifeThis is my new wife, the producer of this work. I was on the set of changing jobs, and I was responsible for game production at my previous job. At the time, I still loved and played with the Atlus business, so I never thought I’d eventually work in my current position.

This is a bit on the side, but when I look at the Atlus development site, I feel that everyone has a strong temperament that is closer to the creators than the management. If you compare it to a party RPG, it will be a scene with a lot of “assailants” (laughs). While I realized that they contribute greatly to the quality of the work, I thought it would be best to have therapists and supports so that everyone could focus on development without hesitation, so I decided to dedicate myself to them in this work.

――It’s interesting that you’re just a forward. Sometimes heated discussions are exchanged within such parties…?

Yamaguchihe was there. Atlus has reworked previous works for existing models and released titles with various elements added, but this is almost the first remake to recreate all of the graphics from scratch. What is it?

That’s why I think we’ve had more discussions than ever about how much of the original’s elements should be changed, whether they should be changed, and whether they should be added. Almost half of the workers in this game have played the original version as users, so everyone approaches the development with their own love.

new wifeThe principle is to be faithful to the original version. Then, when there was a part I wanted to add or change with intent, Yamaguchi organized the site vigorously, such as explaining it to Wada and getting approval.

The biggest change is the graphics update. Wasn’t it difficult to reconstruct the original version released on PlayStation 2 as good as “Persona 5”?

YamaguchiYes (laughs). For the characters, we’ve put a lot of effort into creating 3D models and illustrations during conversations that users have come to expect from existing models. The statue is very expressive, and the 3D model is so detailed that you’ll want to zoom in to see it.

――Then let me stare into every nook and cranny without hesitation (laughs). When you look at the 3D model of the main character, you get the impression that he has become a little more dignified.

YamaguchiThe main character in “Persona 3” has a relatively androgynous build among the main characters in the past, but I was careful to highlight the boy power while making the most of that unique atmosphere. I think I managed to bring out his unique charm that is different from the other main characters, so I hope you guys will pay attention to him.

Also, this isn’t limited to the main character, but over time, I think each character’s image has been updated through the many sequels and spin-off titles, so I’m just sticking with the original. I was careful not to deviate from the existing image, not just exist.

――Junpei’s illustrations and CG models might not seem like a picky character saying things like “telettettete~” or “raise the samurai’s hand” at first glance (laughs).

new wifeIf you look at the stand-up art and CG models, you might notice that it’s a bit cool, but don’t worry, Junpei’s “likeness” is still very much present in this work (laughs). Regarding the adaptations of the different productions, most of the lines have not been changed respecting the original, but when it comes to manga-like expressions, the head and body have been raised, so trying to reproduce everything as given is given the impression of inconsistency. I tended to be like that, so I made adjustments so the head and body didn’t feel out of place. I think it is more elegant while retaining the atmosphere of the original version.

――Also, Yukari’s apron looks like it’s going to be a treat for the eyes.

new wifeThis apron look is from this work, so I think a lot of people have noticed it. Details will be announced later, but in this work, there are more elements to spend private time with friends in the residence. We have prepared various situations other than cooking, so please look forward to it.

It is a side story added in this work. Personally, Fuka has been my favorite since the original release, so I’d like to enjoy her look and side story up close.

new wifeI can’t talk about the details yet, but there is a scene where Fuka is actually reflected in a close-up of a certain event scene, so I would like people who are Fuka fans to see this scene as soon as possible (laughs). In all seriousness, Kazahana’s soft CG atmosphere can also be felt, so I’d be glad if you could pay attention to this aspect.

――Also, one of the scenes in Persona 3 that left a strong impression on me was when Sanada awakened his Persona. The realistic acting of the voice actors was amazing, but how was the voice actors in this work?

YamaguchiAs with Sanada’s wake-up scene, “Persona 3” contains a lot of serious scenes, so I remember being overwhelmed by the voice actors’ performances in such scenes. From beginning to end of the story, the emotions of each swinging character are beautifully portrayed, and I think the fact that I was able to challenge this work again makes an impact.

The school, town and dungeons have all been rebuilt to fit the 3D models.

YamaguchiThe playing field is not simply enlarged to fit the head and body, but is made so that you can feel the intensity of the gameplay elements and scenery.

new wifeEverything has been revamped, but the biggest visual change is “Tartarus” (the dungeon you explore to get to the top). In addition to changing the appearance, we’ve added elements worth exploring here and there, and made it possible to dash on the go.

――Regarding the scenario, it is said that the side story of the character will be added, but what will it be?

YamaguchiThe main story is the so-called group drama, so I thought there was still room to go deeper into the story of the friends who didn’t draw much in the original version. It will be a new element different from the “Community” (a system like the “Corp” in “Persona 5”) that deepens relationships with certain characters.

However, the conditions for falling in reverse have also been significantly relaxed, so that simply leaving the connection as in the original release doesn’t cause it to fall back. I don’t think Broken itself would have happened unless there were a lot of things from the time of the original release, and I thought it would be pretty terrible not to be able to move forward with the community if that happened, so after that thinking about it, I decided to scrap it.

–Show. Another unique feature of “Persona 3” is the concept of the main character’s physical condition, such as “Excellent” and “Exhausted”.

YamaguchiThe physical condition system has also been abolished in this work. I think it’s one of the elements that made Persona 3 unique, but it didn’t mesh well with how the game was planned and completed within the calendar system. I ended up fighting against the odds repeatedly, and even though I still had SP left in the dungeon capture, my friends left, and I had no choice but to go home.

The feeling that things didn’t go as planned was one of the real pleasures of “Persona 3,” but given the game’s pacing and overall convenience, we decided to scrap it in this business.

――Furthermore, in Persona 3, there was also a specification that you couldn’t directly instruct your comrades on what to do during battle.

――So you’re doing a lot of revisions, big and small. By the way, in the original “Persona 3” it was very difficult to get all the human parameters of the hero and the community ranks to MAX before reaching the end in the first theatrical run. For that matter, how about “reload”?

YamaguchiThese items can be completed in the first round. As expected, it’s not as intense as the original version, so don’t worry about it (laughs).

WadaIn the original version, it was a balance where you could not waste even a single day in the game. In fact, at the time, the development team thought it would be impossible to win the championship on the first lap, so when we learned that the fans had completed a schedule that would allow us to do that, we were like, “Oh, we can do that.!?” I was surprised ( He laughs).

The power of fans is amazing no matter the era…!

Yamaguchi“Reload” isn’t so loose that you can play and complete it without thinking about it, but I think it has the same leeway as “Persona 5.” By all means, I hope you all have a useful day.

――I think there are a lot of series fans who have feelings for Persona 3, so I have high expectations.

YamaguchiThank you. As for the development progress, we have entered the stage of final adjustment. I am sure that people who have waited for this for a long time will be satisfied. During development, when I was at a loss for a decision, I often forgot my position as someone who worked for Atlus and thought about what would make me happy as a fan waiting for the new release. All employees created it while evaluating these views, so please look forward to it.

In other words, it’s something the whole team has been working on, considering it’s a “deepening” and not an evolution of “Persona 3”.
