Introducing controlled features – New features in Windows 11 through CFR technology

With the Moment 3 update for Windows 11, Microsoft has incorporated a new way to introduce new functionality gradually. For us, the “Get the latest updates as soon as they are available” button is to blame.

As with A/B testing (controlled subtraction), we can now decide if we want to get the new functionality of the feature update (instant update) immediately or later. Microsoft calls this Controlled Feature Rollout. If the switch is set to off, we will only get the new functionality with the next security update next month. If the switch is on, the new functionality will be rolled out gradually by Microsoft.

The first rollout of the controlled feature was KB5026446. Some have wondered why there are so many in the description but nothing available after the update.

This could have several reasons:

  • The new adapter under Windows Update is not set to On
  • Telemetry is blocked by software and tools. (We also described it here for a program).
  • Microsoft has not yet released the functionality for PC.

Microsoft has integrated Group Policy for managed devices (such as corporate computers). This can be found under gpedit.msc -> Local Computer Policies -> Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update -> End User Interface Management.

Then there is the policy: “Enable features offered via the service that are turned off by default”. If administrators set the policy to “Activated” here, those computers will also receive the new functionality in advance.

Microsoft itself will always provide these updates and descriptions List on this page.

If it remains known for now, we’ll get the next feature update in the Release Preview channel in mid-September. It then crossed the CFR technology on the 4th Tuesday of September for everyone, and then it was incorporated into the security update on the 2nd Tuesday in October.
