Intel invests $4.6 billion in a chip factory in Poland

Munich Intel wants to produce urgently needed computer chips in a third EU country: the US company announced on Friday that it will invest $4.6 billion in a factory in Poland. Semiconductors from the company and from other customers must be processed and tested at the plant near Wroclaw.

CEO Pat Gelsinger said Poland is ideal for working with Intel’s sites in Germany and Ireland. The Eastern European country “was also very cost-effective compared to other production sites around the world,” the director added.

The world’s second largest semiconductor producer already operates several large factories in Ireland, and Gelsinger also wants to build two new ones in Magdeburg in the coming years. Intel is currently negotiating with the federal government to increase the grants.
