To celebrate the start of the collaboration, Daniel Arsham has created a 20-meter Hublot-inspired sundial in the snowy landscape of Zermatt overlooking the Schwarzsee at an altitude of 2,583 metres.

ZERMATT, Switzerland, March 7, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The Swiss watchmaker is pursuing its own uniqueness with a new ambassador, American contemporary artist Daniel Arsham. Based in New York City, Daniel is known for his powerful work across a broad range of paintings, sculptures, installations, and films. He frequently explores the concept of time in his work, most notably in his ‘Connecting Time’ series and his iconic ‘Hourglass’ work.

To cement the time of this new collaboration, and to celebrate the eternal link between watchmaking, art and craftsmanship, Mr. Daniel chose the mountain resort of Zermatt, Switzerland, overlooking the Matterhorn, well-known in the Swiss Alps. She has created a 20-meter sundial that will be open to the public for a limited time in the snowy landscape of Tokyo. Entitled “Light & Time,” the temporary installation uses natural elements to fuse his roots in time management with the ingenuity of land art. The practical outdoor time display installation uses shadows cast by an obelisk in the shape of a quartz crystal. The shadow of the central pointer projected as the sun moves throughout the day indicates the time in the snowpack. Arsham created a sundial from the natural elements of the Swiss Alps, fusing form and function. This fusion of ice and light combines its crystal universe with the Hublot tradition and the history of Swiss watchmaking. This sundial reflects Hublot’s design code and includes familiar motifs, such as the famous screw securing the “big bang” bezel. This installation is so ingenious that it can only be seen from the top of the mountain. To see this, art lovers must use the ski lifts in Zermatt.

This year is an important one for Daniel. It’s been 20 years since he was awarded the Gell-Mann Trust Fellowship and received the prestigious GNMH Award, bringing him to the fore in the art world. He has since become one of the most influential and sought-after contemporary artists in the art world. He studied at Cooper Union in New York and has exhibited in New York, Paris, Tokyo, Shanghai, Los Angeles, and London to date, fashion designer Hedi Slimane, artistic director of Dior, Kim Jones, Porsche, and others. There is a past collaboration with Pokémon and others. His work alters or reconstructs familiar forms in what commentators have described as “modern mythological archeology”.
