In the Escape from Tarkov community, there seem to be only two big topics at the moment. The vast majority of players are waiting for the next survey, while others finally want to see and explore the new, much-announced map “Streets of Tarkov” in the game. As announced by developer and publisher Battlestate Games, Streets of Tarkov, or SoT for short, should be the largest map in hardcore FPS and offer space for up to 40 PMCs at the same time.

After the last presentation of the map as part of the third teaser video, which premiered about eleven months ago as part of Summer Game Fest 2021, it has been quiet for a long time about the main project within the genre-defining shooter. Perhaps the most important piece of information that emerged from the said teaser is in the description of the video on YouTube. There it says SoT should be implemented with upcoming game update 0.13. Now there is news.

Escape from Tarkov director Nikita Boyanov announced via Twitter that the first edition of Streets of Tarkov will be released before the start of fall 2022. what does that mean?

As can be seen from the quoted tweet, work is currently underway to complete the map. It is hoped that the first version of the SoT will be available to players before the onset of fall. However, hope is of course not an assurance or a guarantee, so it may take longer before we are allowed to put our shoes on the streets of Tarkov. At this point, we can only hope that the developers at BSG will make as good progress as they currently hope for themselves.

According to Buyanov, the big problem that still needs to be solved is performance. “Right now, performance is a critical point,” the game director adds in response to his announcement yesterday. This statement is not surprising, given that Battlestate Games is already having problems making performance on some maps consistently good and further improving it.

Due to the fact that all the maps implemented so far have a significantly smaller scale and are organized much more horizontally than most likely large parts of Streets of Tarkov, the performance problems are not surprising. This is another clear indication that Streets will also be released in divisions and may not initially accommodate 40 PMCs per raid. After all, Buyanov himself talks about the “first edition” about which the release in the summer is supposed to be.
