Contract talks resume between striking Hollywood writers and studios

LOS ANGELES — Stalled contract talks between striking Hollywood writers and major studios and streaming services are set to resume, the two groups announced Thursday, a day after a large demonstration by actors and writers.

In a short statement sent on the 136th day of the writers’ strike, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said it was working to schedule a meeting next week. The Writers Guild of America has requested the resumption of talks, the group said.

“Every AMPTP member company is committed and eager to reach a fair agreement and work with the WGA to end the strike,” the coalition said.

The WGA communicated the development to its approximately 11,000 members several hours later.

“Dear Members, The WGA and AMPTP are in the process of setting a date to return to the Chamber. In solidarity with the WGA Negotiating Committee.

Hollywood actors are also on strike, but will conduct separate negotiations with AMPTP. It is the first joint strike by both unions in several decades.

This development comes at a time when progress in ending the strike appears to be stalling, something that neither party wanted. Executives at major television networks are beginning to consider how to salvage the fall broadcast season to include original material. Meanwhile, many actors and writers were running out of funding even though there were various groups set up to help them.

However, there are still big differences between writers, studios and streamers. This includes requiring writers to employ a certain number of writers for each show, at a level not agreed upon by studios and streamers. There is also disagreement about how to deal with waste, especially with regard to streaming services. The writers were also concerned about the language surrounding AI to ensure that their work would not be cannibalized by AI entities.

Pressure was also coming from investors and Wall Street amid fears that studios would suffer significant losses due to the strike affecting California’s economy in general.
