I have reviewed Asus ROG Ally Z1 A few weeks ago, if you saw my final result, you would assume I wasn’t positive for it. In fact, I said no one should buy the Z1 model due to its much worse performance for just under $100. This hasn’t changed, as the Z1 Extreme is perfect for most people, unless you plan exclusively to play indie games.
However, this was the most conflicted review I’ve ever had to write, and for good reason. The truth is, I’m obsessed with the ally. Although my review stated that I loved technology, that was a bit of a stretch. I’ve found myself using this portable gaming rig so frequently that I’m more than willing to say it’s my favorite gaming “laptop” ever.
I can’t stop using the Asus ROG Ally
I’ve been obsessed with the concept of a gaming laptop ever since Steam surface, but my fascination was pushed forward by the idea of broad compatibility with Windows. The Asus ROG Ally did just that, which is a massive achievement in modern gaming technology.
As someone who loves mobile games, my favorites are like PlayStation Vita And Nintendo Switch Great, but its biggest problem is its limited library. Yes, the Switch has a lot of great games, but they’re expensive and it’s been hard to justify repurchasing games I already own on other platforms.
But the ally demolishes this barrier. all steam, epicetc Xbox Game Pass The title I had available at my fingertips, easily enjoyed from the comfort of my bed, a concept I’m unhealthyly obsessed with. And anything that normally runs on Windows is there too, including emulators and an endless array of applications.
You’re probably thinking, “Can’t a gaming laptop do it all?” And while that’s true, I have a confession: I’m not having fun Gaming laptops For personal use. Admittedly, this is ironic as someone who reviews them professionally, but I’m not a huge fan. There are many modes in which I enjoy gaming, but with their combination of lower power, obnoxiously loud fans, and extreme heat, gaming laptops are easily the worst.
When I want to play games on Windows, I turn on my desktop computer. Otherwise, my country PS5Play station 3, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch, which are all set up near your TV, let me chime in. There’s no better gaming laptop than any of these platforms; They’re heavy, have small screens, and can’t be easily used without a desk (unless you want to burn your legs).
And before people start saying “just bring trays to use in bed so you don’t notice the heat.” Oh, yes, how convenient. I place this huge tray on my lap or on a flimsy mattress so I can balance my gaming laptop on it and have it burn like a fiery inferno in front of me. What a great way to approach games!
I’ve been reviewing gaming laptops for three years now, but outside of testing, I’ve never incorporated them into my daily gaming habits. That changed with the Asus ROG Ally, and regardless of whether you consider it a gaming laptop or not, it will be one for the purposes of my argument.
Since I got it, I’ve played Lies of P, Unpacking, Little Nightmares II, Limbo , and The Inside . I recently started running Gris and Signalis, while I already have 40 other games installed on it. “I have plans to beat them all. It’s only been three weeks, but in three years of testing gaming laptops, I’ve only beaten Horizon: zero dawn On one. This is because my desktop computer was very weak at that time.
Instead of being stuck with an unwieldy, fiery, noisy gaming laptop, I can enjoy a compact, lightweight, handheld gaming system every night. I look forward to settling down for an hour or two before bed, resting comfortably under my sheets, engulfed in the irresistible magic of the ally.
minimum
Yes, I criticized the Asus ROG Ally Z1 for its weak hardware, but it’s a perfect device for my usage habits. Sure, it’s not technically a gaming “laptop,” but it can perform its most important functions better. It’s amazing how easy it is to find a home in the daily gaming cycle.
On the other hand, it would be unfair to pretend that this is a specific achievement of the ally himself. The mere concept of a powerful portable Windows gaming rig stole my heart. Asus was the first company to do a good job of producing one.
the Lenovo Legion Go, which has similar capabilities except with detachable controllers as the Nintendo Switch, will launch in November and could end up winning the tournament. No matter which company produces the best version of this type of device, it will become my obsession. Until then, I’m using the Asus ROG Ally daily and it’s easily my favorite gaming laptop.
