AMD Radeon ProRender plugin supports HIP | CGinterest

June 7, 2023 (local time) – We announced that the Radeon ProRender plug-in now supports HIP. Blender, Maya and Houdini plug-ins seem to support it.

Radeon ProRender plugin now supports HIP

Since its introduction in 2016, Radeon ProRender and its plug-ins have used OpenCL 1.2 for GPU rendering, but now use HIP (Heterogeneous Interface for Portability), AMD’s C++-based programming language. An updated version has been introduced.

This has resulted in some minor performance improvements for some cards and will be better supported in the future. HIP by ProRender supports AMD Vega and newer GPUs,on legacy cardsAn older OpenCL backend is available.

For more information on migrating the ProRender SDK to HIP, please see the article below.

March 10, 2023 (local time) — AMD has announced the latest update to its traceable physical Radeon ProRender SDK 3 engine…

The HIP backend for the Radeon ProRender plug-in is called “RPR – Final”. This is intended to provide the most accurate rendering of photo-realistic images suitable for rendering the final frame. ProRender has another mode called “RPR – Interactive” which is for fast iterative design work in viewport.

About Interactive Mode (RPR – Interactive)

Radeon ProRender’s interactive mode is built around Vulkan. This means using improvements such as AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) 2 upscaling technology. FSR 2 allows display at a lower (faster) resolution and upscaling to match the display port’s resolution, resulting in an imperceptible loss of image quality. RPR Interactive may not be as numerically accurate as RPR – Final, but it looks visually similar in its viewport action.

about performance

RPR – Interactive works best on GPUs with hardware accelerated ray tracing, such as AMD’s RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 cards, but GPUs without hardware ray tracing are still supported.

Additionally, support for GPUs with less than 8GB of VRAM, such as the AMD Ryzen 7000 series CPUs with integrated RDNA2 GPUs, has been improved. Also, improvements have been made to the plugin to provide better performance presets in interactive mode.

In the following video, you can see a performance comparison of the Blender viewport between RPR – Interactive, Blender’s Course Viewer, and Blender’s EEVEE Viewer.

Cycles is the default GPU path tracker that comes with Blender and gives realistic results but is noisy and slow.

EEVEE is a real-time renderer with low quality global illumination which results in a lack of soft shadows and poor backlighting,No noise. Also, moving the camera causes a “jump” as the lighting is recalculated.

With Radeon ProRender, we’ve tried to get the best of both worlds to provide a better interactive rendering experience. Ray tracing using Vulkan and hardware acceleration is available in this renderer. It also uses AMD’s FSR upscaling technology and RESTIR-based lighting technology for faster and more accurate rendering.

The downside is that artists coming from Cycles have to adjust the lights. However, you should get a smoother, less blurry, and more accurate viewport experience.
