Shenzen is the Silicon Valley of China. The mega-city brings together the innovative power of China and is permeated with technology. Chinese expert Frank Siren visited the city. In an interview with FOCUS Online, he spoke about his impressions of what makes China so successful and what Germany can learn.
Siren summarized his impressions in a book: Shenzen – Future made in China. There he writes: “If you want to know how we will live soon and what technologies will shape us, you should look to Shenzhen.” The city of 20 million in southern China is one of the most innovative cities in the world and is now casting a shadow over Silicon Valley. More than 260,000 patents were registered in Shenzhen in 2019. This is a record number in China.
Shenzhen is the global capital of e-mobility
Whether it is electronic cars, drones, 5G, robotics or toys, the mega city is a leader in many areas today. Local public transport is already 100 percent running on green electricity, and the first self-driving vehicles are on the road. With 16,000 e-buses, 22,000 e-cabs, and countless electric scooters, the city is the global capital of e-mobility.
The origin of Shenzen’s innovative strength lies in the fact that innovation, production and financial hub with Hong Kong are close together, Sieren explains, but also because the city is very young. Along with Mumbai in India, it is the mega-city with the lowest average age in the world: 29 years. She is 35 years old in London, 36 years old in New York, 43 years old in Berlin and Hong Kong.
High speed innovation
Siren writes in his book, “The city is kind of a Memphis/Tennessee for the tech scene. For global tech, it was rock and roll for the music of the 50s and 60s. It freed itself from the shackles of Silicon Valley and those of European traditionalists anyway.” No idea is too far off in the beginning, no attempt is too bold, no idea is too bold.” Many developers have left the patent competition behind.
