Michael Dell: After serving as CEO for two decades, Dell resigned as then-chairman Kevin Rollins. Dell remained in the position of Chairman of the Company’s Board of Directors and in January 2007 resumed his role as CEO at the request of the Company’s Board of Directors.

Steve Hoffman: He created Reddit with classmate Alexis Ohanian in 2005 and sold the site to Condé Naste a year later to pursue other projects. Hoffman later admitted that he regretted selling the service and returned as CEO in 2015 after the controversy over interim chair Ellen Bao.

Steve Jobs: Forced to leave Apple after losing a power struggle with CEO John Sculley (1983-1993). Jobs later recounted that this freed him to enter one of the most creative periods of his life, which included co-founding the graphics group that later became Pixar Studios. Jobs returned to Apple as CEO in 1997.

Larry Page: As CEO of Google from 1998 to 2001, Page stepped down in August of that year to allow Eric Schmidt to steer the company through initial growth difficulties and an initial public offering, including giving more credibility to investors from the Page’s twenty founders. And Sergey Brin can do that. In 2011, Page returned to his role as CEO of Google and then CEO of parent company Alphabet Inc. He retired from this position at the end of 2019.
