TAYLORSVILLE, North Carolina – Plant sign and email sent to employees: This is how Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams workers suddenly learned they didn’t have a job anymore.

The furniture company has a factory and office in Taylorsville, among other North Carolina cities. In accordance with the sign on the truck gate leading to the Taylorsville plant, the following locations will cease operations immediately, and employees must not report to work on Monday:

  • Headquarters: Taylorsville
  • Frame plant: Hiddenite
  • NCDC: Statesville

Interim CEO Chris Moy sent an August 26 email to staff explaining that the closure was solely due to financial issues and the current economic climate.

“While we have had the support of our wonderful employees, like you, Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams have recently and unexpectedly learned that we are unable to secure the necessary financing to continue business operations,” Moye wrote. “In the wake of this unfortunate development, the Company will unfortunately need to wind down operations and terminate employment of our employees beginning August 26, 2023.”

He apologized for not being notified, claiming that the situation was not expected.

A county spokesperson told Channel 9 reporter Dave Faherty that no one else had any prior knowledge of the closures.

The spokesperson said the county will work with the West Piedmont Council of Governments and NCWorks to help the hundreds of people who have lost their jobs. Moi also wrote that the company is working with local elected officials, the Displaced Workers Unit, and the state Rapid Response.
