This is an image of FS Tau, a young star in the constellation Taurus and its surroundings. Located in a star-forming region about 450 light-years from Earth, FS Taurus is a young star that is thought to have only been around for about 2.8 million years.
According to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), FS Taurus consists of the binary star 'FS Tau A', which shines brightly near the center of the image, and the star FS Taurus (a thin jet) to the left and to the upper right of the binary star FS Tau A. , a multi-star system consisting of the star FS Tau B (FS Tau B), which emits a restricted, high-velocity gas flow.
The two stars that make up star A are classified as young variable stars called T Tauri stars. Hydrogen fusion reactions have not yet begun in the centers of T Tauri stars, which will later evolve into main sequence stars. The energy released when the star contracts under the influence of its own gravity and the surrounding matter accumulates, and is said to shine.
The younger B star, on the other hand, is thought to be a protostar in transition to becoming a T Tauri star, the star itself still surrounded by a protoplanetary disk made of dust and gas. Because Earth is positioned so that it can see the disk from the side, the image shows what appears to be the dark edge of the disk and the bright sides of the disk from which the jets flow.
B stars are also classified as 'Herbig-Haro objects'. The halo object is a bright, nebula-like object that can be seen around a young star. Gas flows from the young star in the form of stellar winds or jets that collide with the surrounding clouds of gas and dust, and the excited material is released. It is believed that light is emitted. The light blue jet has an asymmetric structure, which is thought to be due to the fact that the material is being ejected at different speeds.
The image was initially created based on data acquired by the Hubble Space Telescope's (HST) High Performance Camera for Sky Surveys (ACS) published on March 25, 2024.
