In the latest episode of ZDF Magazin Royale, Jan Böhmermann launched a heated discussion about the gaming community. By provocatively asking whether gaming is truly “the last apolitical place on Earth,” it highlights the contradictions and toxic behavior within the scene. The satirist asserts that racism, sexism and extremist views are more widespread than many players would like to admit.
On the September 27 episode. Böhmermann addresses the conflict between streamer Shurjoka and YouTuber KuchenTV. Churjoka had called for a boycott of “Hogwarts Legacy” in her community to take a stand against JK Rowling's transphobic comments. What followed was hatred from the gaming scene – fueled by KuchenTV and its followers.
Who controls gaming platforms?
The so-called “GamerGate” is also referred to. In 2014, a rumor circulated in the United States that game developer Zoe Quinn had had a sexual relationship with a gaming journalist who had reported favorably on her games. Although there was no solid evidence of this, a violent storm erupted, leading to defamation (publishing personal information about people) and threats against Quinn. The episode of the late-night satirical show aims to provide a sharp commentary on the lack of moderation standards on platforms like Steam. Players often think of this as an apolitical space.
Right-wing extremist content
According to Böhmermann, far-right profiles frequently post content that is not monitored or not monitored at all – the moderator also refers to media outlets that spread reports on the radicalization of killers through the Internet.
According to the moderator, the show was briefly deleted on YouTube. The clip is now available again and can also be found in the ZDF media library.
