It’s a feature that many Mac users are familiar with, but now it’s implemented normally, so you may have forgotten how to use it, or you may have unexpectedly overlooked it.

What type of task control function?

If you’re on a Mac and have many windows on your screen, it can be hard to find what you’re looking for. Also, if you use multiple apps on your laptop, you may find it cramped because the screen space is inevitably limited. Mission control is very effective in such situations.

Mission Control’s role is roughly described as “organizing and switching windows” and “expanding the desktop”. This may not be a good idea, but it is not difficult because you can understand it intuitively if you actually touch it.

There are different ways to start Mission Control. To use the keyboard, press the Mission Control key assigned to the “F3” key, or use a key shortcut[control]+ key[↑]. Also, when using the trackpad gesture, you can “swipe up with three (or four) fingers”, and in the case of the Magic Mouse, you can tap the touch sensor portion on the top surface twice with two fingers to call it.

Alternatively, you can open Launchpad and tap the Mission Control app icon to bring it up. How you call it a matter of taste, so choose the method that works for you.

On the Magic Trackpad, swipe up with three or four fingers to activate Mission Control. You can choose any gesture you want to set in the TrackPad panel in System Preferences.

Basic use of mission control

When Mission Control starts, the window of the currently open application will be minimized and inserted on the screen. All hidden windows that overlap behind the front window are also displayed, so you can quickly find the window you’re looking for.

When you find the window you want, click on it to bring it to the foreground. When using a Mac, I often switch apps frequently to work, but with Mission Control like this this can be done seamlessly.

If you start Mission Control with many windows open, the expanded window will be minimized for a panoramic view.

Click any window in Mission Control to return to the original screen and bring that window to the foreground with it selected.

A window organizer for every app

By default on your Mac, when Mission Control is launched, the application windows will be randomly arranged, regardless of type. For example, if you expand three windows with “TextEdit”, each window will be placed separately on the screen.

This is fine when the number of open windows is small, but if you have many open windows, then the thumbnail when you start Mission Control will be small, and it will be difficult to find the desired window.

A useful thing to consider is the “Group windows by application” setting in the Tasks Control Panel in System Preferences. When this is enabled, windows will be displayed together for each app when Mission Control starts.

In other words, in the previous example, the three TextEdit windows are displayed together in one place, making it easy to find the TextEdit window even if there are many open windows. Especially for those who tend to open many applications, it is recommended to enable the setting.

However, even though the windows are displayed together for each application, the more windows open, the smaller the thumbnail for each window when viewing Mission Conrtol. Therefore, it can be difficult to check the contents of each window.

When you start Mission Control, the application windows (here TextEdit, Safari, Notes) are randomly arranged by default.

Open the Task Control Panel in System Preferences and check the Group windows by application.

Separately prearranged application windows (here, TextEdit) are displayed together so that they overlap each other.

You can easily expand the operation space

Now that you understand one of Mission Control’s roles, “Organizing and Switching Windows”, let’s look at another role, “Desktop Optimization”.

This is a function also called “virtual desktop”, which is used to increase the number of desktops that originally only have one and expand the operating space.

To create a new virtual desktop, simply launch Mission Control, move your cursor over the top right corner of the screen, and tap +. After that, a thumbnail called “Desktop 2” will be added at the top of the screen. Click it to display the newly created virtual desktop (Desktop 2) on the screen.

What’s convenient when you build multiple desktops like this is that you can organize the applications (windows) used for each desktop. When working in a workspace, only the windows in that workspace are displayed.

You can create up to 16 virtual desktops, so try switching apps to display for each desktop, or separate desktops for work and private use so that you can use them efficiently.

To move between desktops, start Mission Control and tap on the desktop thumbnail displayed at the top, or short the key[control]+ “← (→)” key, or three fingers (four fingers). You can do this by swiping the trackpad with. You can also click the Dock icon to automatically go to the desktop where the application is open.

Launch Mission Control and click[+]Top right of the screen to create a new “Desktop 2”. You can create a desktop with up to 16 screens with the same process.

Click “Desktop 2” in Mission Control to see a brand new desktop. Files and folders saved to your desktop will be displayed on the new desktop as they are.

You can switch the desktop using the . key[control]+[← (←)]Shortcut, swipe the trackpad left or right with three fingers (four fingers), or swipe Magic Mouse left or right with two fingers. The entire screen will switch to the side slide

If you want to move the window open in “Desktop 1” to “Desktop 2,” drag the window on “Desktop 1” to the “Desktop 2” thumbnail.

If you want to delete the created virtual desktop (Desktop 2 in this case), move the cursor to the thumbnail and click[x]that appears.The windows opened on the deleted virtual desktop will be merged into the desktop on the left.

Fix the arrangement of virtual desktops

Here are some settings you should know when using multiple virtual desktops (three or more desktop computers). It’s about the order of the virtual desktops that appear at the top when Mission Control is launched.

By default, the setting to automatically sort virtual desktops is enabled, and virtual desktops containing windows of the most recently used applications are automatically sorted so that they are on the left side (except for Desktop 1).

However, with this feature enabled, it’s easy to lose track of where the virtual desktop you want to use, and finding a destination can be cumbersome. So, let’s fix virtual desktops in any order. Settings can be made in the task control panel of System Preferences.

Open the Task Control Panel in System Preferences and uncheck Automatically sort playspaces based on recent use to lock the order of virtual desktops.

Install virtual desktop

The next method is to install a specific application window on a specific virtual desktop.

For example, if you want to fix “Mail” to Desktop 2, with Desktop 2 displayed, click the secondary button (right-click or key[control]+ Click) the Mail app icon in the Dock to open the context menu augmented.

Then select options and click on this desktop then it will open mail on desktop 2. By doing this you can create an environment where desktop 1 is used to work like Excel and desktop 2 as a screen for checking emails.

Go to the desired desktop using the shortcut

The last method is to use keyboard shortcuts to navigate directly to any virtual desktop. With the increase in the number of desktops, navigating between desktops by scrolling and other operations becomes cumbersome and time consuming.

Also, if you open the app in full screen mode or leave Split View open, the number of swipes will increase accordingly. In this regard, if you use keyboard shortcuts, for example, you can move from desktop 1 to desktop 4 in an instant, which can significantly reduce the time and effort spent moving the desktop.

To use keyboard shortcuts, you need to enable Settings in Keyboard for System Preferences, but since you only need to check the settings, we recommend using them when you increase the number of virtual desktops.
