Wieselburg – Volvo is based on LED technology from ZKW

The Wieselburg automotive lighting specialist equips the all-new Volvo EX90 electric SUV with high-quality LED headlights with a unique design. The basis is high-resolution digital lighting modules with a resolution of more than 1.3 million pixels, which create a precisely controlled light image on the road. The high-tech light dynamically adapts to the traffic situation and precisely blocks other road users.

Thus, the system contributes to providing a high level of safety for drivers, pedestrians and animals. As a unique feature, the high-quality LED headlights can flash the hammer-shaped daytime running lights typical of the Swedish brand. When you switch to high beam, the daytime running lights split up and down, revealing the main headlight. “The unique and typical brand front lighting combines exceptional design with innovative lighting technology, which effectively contributes to a high level of traffic safety,” explains Wilhelm Steiger, CEO of ZKW Group.

High definition LED pixel light matches the unique design

The headlights of the new SUV are an evolution of the distinctive headlight design that the brand first introduced in the second generation of the XC90 in 2015. The LED lighting elements in the daytime running lights form a hammer-shaped design, with the head divided into six light parts. While the trunk consists of ten other elements. If you switch to the main light, the hammer splits horizontally and the main light becomes visible. The action mechanism not only switches from daytime running lights to main beams, but also emphasizes the car’s starting sequence with a “wink” of the headlights. “This moving lighting function is unique and only available from this manufacturer,” Steiger explains.

As the basis for the headlight, ZKW uses a “Segment Light” light unit that combines matrix high beam and low beam. The signal lighting system combines daytime running lights, position lights and indicators in a particularly compact form factor for a striking design. The daytime running lights, which move thanks to innovative movements, give the new SUV a unique appearance. When the car is unlocked, the headlight elements flash one by one before unlocking and revealing the high beam with a flashing effect.

Development in Wieselburg, production in Mexico and China

The smart headlight was developed at ZKW’s site in Wieselburg and is manufactured at ZKW in Silao/Mexico and Dalian/China. “Volvo is a Swedish manufacturer, but it has a Chinese parent company, Geely. “We produce the headlights for all Volvo e-cars worldwide in our factories in China and Mexico and not in Austria or Slovakia, partly due to high staff costs,” the spokeswoman explained. On behalf of the ZKW Group, Sandra Simonidis Huber, when asked by NÖN.

High requirements on design

When developing high-tech headlights, various requirements had to be taken into account. On the one hand, the system must be able to withstand at least 500,000 open and close cycles under all environmental influences. Furthermore, the horizontal portion of the daylight must reach its final position within 500 milliseconds to enable the main lighting functions. In addition, it was necessary to obtain a low weight of the moving components, while at the same time harmonizing the daytime running lights. “Our development department has been able to meet the brand’s high design standards with a lot of commitment. By using recycled plastic granules and aluminum made from 40 percent recycled raw materials, we are also making a significant contribution to sustainability.
