Wicked: Star Wars – The Dark Side of the Force

Wicked: Star Wars – The Dark Side of the Force

Villainous – To be honest, I still don't understand the word, but the game with evil Disney characters: I love it! That's why I've got all the expansion boxes available for purchase so far. I've played it many times and enjoy doing it over and over again.

With Villainous: Star Wars – The Dark Side of the Force, there's another offering, with one of the biggest brand names on the planet. Admittedly, I've never been able to get a foothold in the Star Wars universe. After the first three parts of the film series, it was over for me and I never watched the rest of the films in their entirety.

So now one of my favorite game series deals with this very topic and I'm faced with a challenge. The villains aren't entirely unknown to me and the Hulk looks instantly familiar. How does Villainous: Star Wars – The Dark Side of the Force perform and what's different? Will the force be with us?

In principle, it is the same as the original game. We have a Star Wars villain, the only one I really know is Darth Vader. Each of these villains pursues their own goal to emerge as the worst and therefore the winner in the end. Heroes like Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, as well as many others will try to stop us from this path.

The structure itself is my home. Each person gets a sector with four spaces matching the villain and a space space. On the left are the personal villain cards and on the right are the fate cards containing positive events. A personal guide explains our character and a gameplay aid is included as well. Our elegantly designed villain starts on the right in the sector and we draw four cards from our hand to start with.

Ambition as a driving force – in a double sense?

The process is actually very simple. At the beginning of our turn we always receive an Aspiration chip, which we can later use to play certain cards or use Aspiration abilities.

We then move the villain to a location in our sector so that we can perform the four actions described there. Then we draw cards.

Procedures are the actual field of activity. We get credits to be able to pay for certain cards. The whole thing is also available as Ambition chip fields so you can play cards with Ambition cards there.

There are also areas where cards are played and can be moved during maneuvers. It is also possible to discard if the cards in our hand do not bring us anything. Cards displayed can also be activated by the field or heroes can be defeated.

On the field of fate, another player plays the hero cards and is chosen at the top of his sector. This means that his activation area becomes smaller because the hero covers two areas that are not available.

To defeat them, we find the answer in our villain group, which contains minions with items ready for us to defeat these same heroes. Of course, some cards are subject to conditions and events in the deck that also unlock abilities. Mostly with costs. This is the whole principle of the game Disney villain.

But Star Wars still has space vehicles. These actions enable new actions but can be blocked by vehicles from the hero pool. If we defeat them in the field, we will lose our car as well.

The endgame is clear. Whoever reaches his goal first during the game is the main villain and wins this space battle.

Conclusion: Is Wicked: Star Wars – The Dark Side of the Force fun?

Villainous: Star Wars – The Dark Side of the Force uses core game elements with additional options. And this is fun. Everything seems to fit here. The characters are built so that there are always close decisions and no villain can emerge as the favorite.

The complexity is easy to handle and you can get into the game within a very short period of time. Was it because I played the original too much? This was difficult for me to access at first.

I was a little disappointed with the characters. Why are they so lukewarm? They could have looked better, but unfortunately the original was no different.

Nice asymmetry

In terms of gameplay, Villainous: Star Wars – The Dark Side of the Force is quite compelling and I think if you are a fan of the series you can fully immerse yourself in it. I like the asymmetrical gameplay, and the tension builds the closer you get to victory. This tension was constantly going back and forth between the players as each tried to make it difficult for the other to succeed.

The happiness of meanness

Pure interactivity and anyone who can take offense when heroes inadvertently show up at the table is well served here. Naturally, the luck factor should not be ignored, because you never know when the right cards will appear that you need to win.

Because hero cards also play a role. You need it, and if your opponents leave you, you have to keep looking for other ways. But even so, everything is perfectly coordinated. Now I have two copies of villainous. They're both great and I think Star Wars fans should pick this one up because the original looks “nicer” to me. Even if it isn't!

So, may the Force be with you as you seek to be the ruler of the universe. Oh, yeah: it doesn't have to be Darth Vader! To me, true evil!
