If you want to watch anime on Netflix in 2022, you have a great choice. Because the streaming service is not only seriously working on implementing the live-action of popular cartoons. On top of that, there are a variety of anime series, including plenty of original series that are available exclusively via the streaming service. For those who are currently having a hard time choosing, I’d like to recommend one thing today: Komi Can’t Communicate. But why this series? I want to show you this with a small review, opinion or recommendation.

What is komi can’t communicate?
The simple title gets the story straight to the point: Komi is apparently a famous and beautiful high school girl who is seen by her classmates as a sublime and cold goddess. The truth is quite different: she has severe communication difficulties and is very shy. In English, everything is simply translated using the catchy term “social anxiety”. Accordingly, she likes to talk to people, have fun, be spontaneous and try things – but then her heart begins to race, shiver and she can no longer do anything. This poisons all areas of life such as conversations, inquiries, karaoke or even ordering in a store. The only person who discovered it by chance is Tadano: he is an almost eerily ordinary student who is determined to help her achieve her most important goal: to have 100 friends.
Why can’t Komi communicate well?
This seems like a relatively common story at first, but the manga adaptation takes on a topic that is becoming more and more topical: communication difficulties and social anxiety as a recognized problem. While shyness has been portrayed as something that can easily be overcome with a little will, Komi Can’t Communicate is not shy about showing how tortuous it is. Shy Komi does not make friends, can hardly sleep because she analyzes situations a lot afterwards and only craves fun activities, in which she practically freezes completely. I know that very well.

Of course it’s not as bad as Komi, but for a long time I had heart palpitations on the most ridiculous of occasions and got nervous. You only need to be a phone call to make an appointment. In this regard, it is painful to watch Komi, but one feels the same joy about each victory of the quiet student. Especially if you’ve been in similar situations a lot yourself or know friends who have these issues.

Everything is softened, of course, by periods of humor. Eventually (however) he ended up in a school for highly talented eccentrics. The interactions are correspondingly strange, for example when a stalker craves a komi, another girl wants to be her dog or another character judges her open activities where she just wants to sink into the ground. Visually, this is conveyed perfectly as the creators of the series fluently switch between drawing styles to depict the most diverse situations.

While the humor and comedic struggles of communication are generally understandable, the series also brings you closer to Japan as a teenager: the rules of a noodle restaurant, a high school cultural festival or even a summer festival with special booths full of hoaxes. If you have not visited Japan before, you will get to know it better. And if you’ve been there before, you’ll learn a few little things!
How long is the Komi Can’t Communicate series?
The nice thing about Komi is that the series isn’t very long. The common denominator of “Komi wants to find friends and get better” allows for a myriad of different little stories that sometimes only take a few minutes to complete. In that regard, you won’t be bound to attend big sessions by watching Season 1 on Netflix. Although episodes are 25 minutes long, they usually contain several stories. The first season contains a total of twelve episodes – and more are said to be in the pipeline. And if you don’t feel like a Japanese soundtrack, now you can also look forward to a well-performed German soundtrack!
