Vienna wants to heat up its new ‘giant boiler’ with wind power | Heating technology | Technique

Until recently, there were oil tanks next to the Spittelau waste incineration plant, and a new thermal power plant is now being built there.

The plant will consist of two instantaneous water heaters, each with a capacity of 5 megawatts, that can be operated independently of each other. If there is an excess supply in the power grid, an application is made via the Austrian Transmission System Power Grid (APG) operator. The system activates within a few minutes, absorbs energy and turns it into hot water at a temperature of around 155 ° C. The hot water is fed into the Vienna district heating network and can therefore be used directly and efficiently in surrounding homes.

To make room for the system, two old oil tanks at the Spittelau site were dismantled last summer. “The fossil past lends itself to innovative energy solutions! The incineration plant, which bears the artistic signature of Hundertwasser, has been a symbol of Vienna since 1992. With its colorful mosaics and round shapes, the facility becomes another symbol of more climate protection in the city in the construction of the building, environmental concrete is also used in part, in line with sustainable recycling management. This is mixed with the construction waste that is created when old buildings are demolished.
The roof of the power system for heating will also be green – similar to Hundertwasser – and designed as a relaxation area, which is a small counter to urban heat islands. In the future, Wien Energie employees will be able to jointly grow tomatoes, peppers and herbs in urban farming areas with high beds.

The Spittelau power-to-heat system is part of the Wien Energie’s climate attack. The ability to transmit virtually lossless energy between the electricity and heating sectors is an important contribution to protecting the city’s climate. Wien Energie put a similar system in operation at Leopoldau in 2017 The electric heater, which works with electrodes, has so far introduced more than 25,000 megawatt hours of environmentally friendly heat from excess electricity into the grid. With the second system in Spittelau, the Wien Energie is equipped for the future and can also mitigate fluctuations in the power grid.
