Trailer technology from Hellrom and Bayernhafen aims to place goods on rails

The patented technology of the Helrom towed vehicle will be used at Bayernhaven in the future. This is intended to enable simple horizontal loading of truck trailers (semi-trailers) onto railways without special cranes. The new KV line for industrial companies from Bavaria is scheduled to start in April 2024, the two companies announced.

The center of this will be the trailer port in Bayernhaven Regensburg. From April 2024, Helrom aims to establish a daily railway line from Bayernhaven Regensburg to Lepeny in Hungary in order to transport spare parts needed for production for an industrial company from Bavaria.

The new connection uses horizontal loading technology developed and patented by Helrom: the truck trailer is separated from the tractor and loaded with
The electrically operated tractor is pushed into the transport bag folded on the side.

By moving truck trailers from road to rail, about 11,000 tons of CO2 emissions are saved annually, and the highways and service areas between Regensburg and Hungary are eliminated from about 17,000 truck trips, Hellrum describes.
In order to make this traffic shift possible, Bayernhaven is investing in the modification of its trailer port at the Regensburg site, a dedicated station for swap bodies and semi-trailers that Bayernhaven operates itself. In the next few months, the areas and entry gate will be modified as well as the infrastructure for charging electric tractor units will be established.
